VMware vSAN 8

Software-defined storage for vSphere combining server-attached flash into a hyperconverged shared datastore with the Express Storage Architecture for next-gen performance.

VMware vSAN 8 is the software-defined hyperconverged storage platform for vSphere, pooling server-attached NVMe flash into a shared datastore with the Express Storage Architecture for higher IOPS, better data efficiency, and native cloud integration.

Top Features

Express Storage Architecture

vSAN 8 introduces ESA, a redesigned single-tier all-NVMe architecture delivering up to 4x higher IOPS, lower latency, and dramatically better data efficiency than earlier vSAN releases.

Hyperconverged shared storage

Pool server-attached NVMe and SSD storage across vSphere hosts into a single shared datastore, eliminating dedicated SAN or NAS arrays while delivering deduplication and encryption.

Native vSphere integration

vSAN runs natively in the ESXi kernel and is managed directly through vCenter, with policy-based management assigning storage policies per VM for performance and resiliency.

Why Your Business Needs VMware vSAN 8

vSAN 8 isn't just storage software, it's the hyperconverged platform combining server-attached flash, native vSphere integration, the Express Storage Architecture, and policy-based management to eliminate SAN.

Eliminate Dedicated SAN Arrays: vSAN pools storage from existing vSphere host servers into a shared HCI datastore, eliminating the cost and complexity of dedicated SAN, NAS, and fibre channel infrastructure.

Express Storage Architecture: ESA’s redesigned single-tier all-NVMe architecture delivers up to 4x higher IOPS, lower latency, and dramatically better data efficiency through always-on compression.

Per-VM Storage Policies: Storage Policy-Based Management lets admins assign per-VM policies for performance tier, RAID level, failure tolerance, and encryption, automating provisioning matched to needs.

Native ESXi & vCenter Integration: vSAN runs natively in the ESXi kernel and is managed directly through vCenter with no additional appliances, agents, or consoles required for storage administration tasks.

Built for how modern enterprises run hyperconverged storage at scale.

Everything your business needs to run hyperconverged storage at scale, delivered in one software-defined platform covering Express Storage Architecture, native vSphere integration, policy-based management, deduplication, encryption, and stretched clusters for DR.

Express Storage Architecture (ESA)

vSAN 8 introduces the Express Storage Architecture, a fully redesigned single-tier all-NVMe storage stack delivering up to 4x higher IOPS, significantly lower latency, and dramatically better data efficiency than the original architecture in earlier vSAN releases. ESA leverages modern NVMe device performance with a new log-structured filesystem, always-on compression, and RAID-6 protection at RAID-1 performance levels. Customers can choose ESA for new deployments or continue with OSA.

Hyperconverged Shared Storage

vSAN aggregates server-attached storage devices including NVMe drives, SSDs, and HDDs across multiple vSphere hosts into a single shared datastore accessible by every VM in the cluster, eliminating the need for dedicated SAN or NAS arrays. Each host contributes capacity to the cluster pool, while distributed RAID protects data across hosts to tolerate disk and host failures without data loss. The hyperconverged architecture lets businesses scale storage and compute together by adding hosts.

Storage Policy-Based Management

Storage Policy-Based Management gives administrators granular per-VM control over storage characteristics including performance tier, RAID level, failure tolerance, encryption, deduplication, and compression policies through a single vCenter interface. Policies are assigned to individual VMs or VMDKs, and vSAN automatically places data on appropriate storage devices to meet policy requirements. SPBM eliminates manual LUN provisioning and lets storage policies follow VMs as they migrate.

Data Services & Encryption

vSAN includes enterprise data services natively in the platform including deduplication and compression to reduce storage consumption, native encryption at rest using FIPS 140-2 validated cryptography, and cluster-wide encryption keys managed through vCenter Key Management Service. Snapshots, clones, and integrated data protection workflows support backup and replication. iSCSI target support lets vSAN serve storage to physical servers and external workloads outside the vSphere cluster as well.

Stretched Clusters & Disaster Recovery

vSAN Stretched Clusters span two physical sites with a witness host at a third location, providing synchronous replication and zero-RPO disaster recovery between data centers for mission-critical workloads requiring continuous availability. Failover happens automatically through vSphere HA when a site fails. vSAN file services deliver native NFS and SMB file shares directly from the vSAN datastore, eliminating dedicated NAS arrays for general-purpose file workloads at any scale.
