Windows Server 2025

Windows Server 2025 is Microsoft’s latest server operating system, generally available since November 2024, delivering hotpatching for Standard and Datacenter via Azure Arc, SMB over QUIC across all editions, Credential Guard on by default, dMSA delegated managed service accounts, 32K Active Directory database page size, GPU partitioning, expanded VM scalability with up to 240 TB RAM and 2,048 vCPUs, and Azure Arc-native management for on-premises, hybrid, and multi-cloud server fleets.

Windows Server 2022

Windows Server 2022 remains widely deployed as the previous LTSC release with mainstream support through October 2026 and Extended Support through October 2031, including Secured-core Server with TPM 2.0, virtualization-based security, HVCI, TLS 1.3 by default, DNS over HTTPS, SMB AES-256 encryption, Storage Migration Service, Hyper-V improvements, and Azure Arc hybrid management. Server 2022 is the right choice for stable on-premises workloads with validated apps not yet ready to migrate.

Editions: Standard, Datacenter, Essentials

Windows Server is licensed per CPU core in 16-core packs across three editions: Standard for general workloads with rights to two virtualized OS environments, Datacenter for highly virtualized and Software-Defined Datacenter deployments with unlimited VMs plus Storage Spaces Direct, Shielded VMs, and SDN, and Essentials for small businesses with up to 25 users and 50 devices on a single physical server. Client Access Licenses (CALs) are required for each user or device.

Active Directory & Hyper-V

Windows Server delivers Active Directory Domain Services for centralized identity, Hyper-V Type 1 hypervisor virtualization, Failover Clustering for high availability, Storage Replica for synchronous and asynchronous block-level replication, Storage Spaces Direct hyperconverged storage, and Software-Defined Networking for virtualized network policy. Server 2025 adds 32K AD page size, dMSA service accounts, GPU partitioning for AI workloads, and rebootless hotpatching across infrastructure.

Hybrid Management & Azure Arc

Azure Arc-enabled Windows Server extends Azure management capabilities on-premises, including unified inventory, Azure Update Manager for centralized patching, Microsoft Defender for Cloud security posture, Azure Monitor logs and metrics, Azure Policy compliance, plus pay-as-you-go metered licensing alongside perpetual licenses. Hotpatching is available as a $1.50 per CPU core monthly Azure Arc subscription, dropping scheduled reboots from approximately 12 per year to 4 baseline restarts.
